First Aid Training — Who Needs It?

It's a common misconception that first aid training is only essential for people working certain jobs. However, it's not just lifeguards and babysitters who might find themselves in situations that call for life-saving capabilities.

What Does First Aid Training Cover?

First aid teaches one to calmly respond to medical emergencies to ensure the patient remains stable until they receive medical attention. To get the most out of your training, sign up for a course most closely aligned with your needs and lifestyle. There are different kinds of first aid:

Occupational First Aid

Also called OFA, occupational first aid is designed to help people manage common medical emergencies that are likely to occur in workspaces. Graduates of this course will be able to provide emergency first aid while keeping calm. They will also receive a three-year certification.

However, their OFA level will determine the extent of situations they can handle.

Level 1

OFA level 1 is the same as workplace emergency first aid. It doesn't require any previous qualifications, but one must be over sixteen to enroll. The course takes 8 hours.

Level 2

OFA 2 is a 36-hour course. It covers more medical conditions than level 2 and is designed following Work Safe BC guidelines.

Level 3

OFA 3 is the highest level. The entire course is 72 hours, and successful graduates will have learned how to provide all emergency first aid skills.

Transportation Endorsement

Candidates must have a valid OFA Level 1 certification to be eligible for this course. The certificate you receive upon completion will only be valid as long as your OFA certificate. So it's advisable to join right after you qualify.

The focus of this course is to teach people how to secure and transport patients.

Emergency First Aid

When seeking courses for emergency first aid, select one that is Red Cross certified. It's a very preliminary training that includes basic first aid that you'd need to respond to an existing medical emergency,

Standard First Aid

Standard first aid, on the other hand, is a course that teaches students how to identify and remove dangers to keep themselves and others around them safe. It's more detailed and should also earn you a Red Cross certification.
